ULTFARMS - Research Network

ULTFARMS is a pioneering project that aims to enhance Europe's capacity for low-trophic aquaculture by promoting the sharing of marine space in multi-use settings. The project seeks to establish commercially viable low-trophic aquaculture production in more challenging environments while prioritising environmental and biodiversity protection, carbon footprint reduction, and commercial viability. A pan-european project, Impact-9 worked closely to deliver the Belgian Pilot with Unversity of Gent, Deltares and Bantry Marine Research Station. Impact-9 designed and supplied the submersible kelp longline for testing as part of the Belgian Pilot.

Sea & Believe - Scalable Red Seaweed Production Pilots

Sea & Believe grow Palmaria palmata for its unique bioactive potential across high-value applications. Its natural compounds offer powerful antioxidant and UV-absorbing properties ideal for next-generation cosmetic formulations, supporting skin protection, brightening, and anti-aging. Operating a site in Cleggan, Co.Galway, Ireland, Imapct-9 have worked in partnership with Sea & Beleive to deploy a submersible Palmaria production system at the site and develop a scalable SeaStrud Grid design to expand production to meet downstream demand.

TTI Marine Renewables - Design Engineering & Validation

Impact-9 has been working in research collaboration with TTI Marine Renewables, based in Inverness, Scotland. TTI has brought its extensive fibre rope and mooring design expertise to the benefit of the design of Net9-S as part of the recent IMPACT project funded by the UK Seafood Innovation Fund. TTI have experience of developing and testing similar structures for the marine renewables sector, most notably Netbuoy.

Team Marine Technologies - Marine Component Design and Automation

Teal Marine Technologies provide Impact-9 with design and prototyping of HDPE components suitable for scalable production, as well as offering solutions for in-situ platforms for sensor measurements and telemetry to enhance monitoring and automation of operations

Collaborative Research Projects

Impact-9 developments are linked to a number of collaborative projects in which Impact-9 co-invested, including:

The Marine Institute in Ireland supported the collaborative “SSG Palmaria” led by Impact-9 and in partnership with Sea & Believe, leading to the deployment of a Palmaria production system and design for scalable production.

The European Commission, funded the ULTFARMS project including co-funding Impact-9 participation.

The UK Seafood Innovation Fund supported IMPACT project, through which the commercialisation of Net9 technology is pursued in the UK in partnership with TTI, most recently delivering the design of the Net9-S platform suitable for technical demonstration in Orkney.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) funded Offshore Aquaculture Renewable Power Solutions (OARPS) project where a collabortation with University College Cork let to extended laboratory testign of the Net9 platform in a wave flume, including to assess the integration of renewable power solutions to meet offshore power demands.

Ireland’s Seafood Develpoment Agency, BIM’s Wild Atlantic Mussels project to which Impact-9 supplied test hardware and numerical modelling services in support of this innovative project led by University College Cork.

ProtoAtlantic supports the prototyping and exploitation of innovative ideas in the maritime sector in the Atlantic Area and supported laboratory testing of Impact-9’s Net9 and Seastrut hardware.
